It’s that time of the year again where everyone around you, including your fellow au pair friends, come up with bizarre “New year, new me” resolutions. Whether it’s thinking of creative ways to keep your host kid’s entertained or treating yourself to a yoga lesson, it’s hard to make time to put these new year resolutions to action. You’re still getting used to your host parent’s unpredictable schedule and the fact that you’re in a whole new country thousands of miles away from home isn’t exactly comforting.
Holiday seasons are the worst time to feel homesick but if happens often. I’ve seen many au pairs feel sad or depressed because they miss their family, friends and their holiday traditions. Never forget! You decided to be an au pair to try new adventures, to try new things and branch out from your comfort zone. You get one year to make the most out of your experience and what great way to start with the New Year!
Whether you’ve been an au pair for 3 months, 6 months or you’ve just arrived, make the most out of your first (or second) New Year celebration. Here are just a few places you can visit if they’re nearby.
Watch the ball drop in NYC’s Times Square. But prepare yourself for the cold and the crowd (and of course, no nearby restrooms!)
There are various other places in New York if Times Square is too hectic for you. Get the Staten Island Ferry where you can see the Times Square fireworks from a distance. Or go to Rockefeller Centre and Empire State Building for a beautiful view.
If you’re spending the night with your host family, it can still be fun! Invite another au pair friend over for the countdown. This way, you’ll be able to enjoy the New Year celebration from the comfort of your own warm home.
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. With some of the world wide known hotels, there’s heaps of entertainment in Vegas to keep you occupied for New Year Celebrations. For a flashier start to the year, check out what Vegas has to offer.
Watching the New Year countdown from the perfect Sydney Harbour can be a great way to spend New Year’s with your au pair friends. Or maybe you prefer to dance the night away on a boat. Dropping that anchor deep into the water seems like a perfect place to start the celebrations. Some boating restrictions may apply so do your research beforehand!
The famous London Eye hold fantastic fireworks for the countdown. Just like New York, it’s a great place to be for a scenic view. Get there early to get the best view of the London Eye.
Whatever your location, make the most out of it. A New Year is a great way to start afresh as an au pair. Just make sure you have terrific company around you for the countdown.
